Samford University Air Force ROTC Detachment Marks 30 Years
Air Force ROTC Detachment 012 at Samford University will observe its 30th anniversary with a variety of activities on Friday, May 3. All alumni of the detachment are invited to participate.
A reception will be held from 2:30 p.m. until 4:30 p.m. at detachment headquarters on the Samford campus.
Dr. Donald Wilson, Lt. Col. USAF (Ret.), the detachment's first commander, will speak at a 7 p.m. banquet at the Richard Scrushy Conference Center on Hwy. 280. Wilson, who retired from the Air Force in 1979, is now a history professor at Samford. Reservation deadline for the banquet is April 26.
The day's events begin with an 8 a.m. golf tournament at Eagle Point Golf Course. Participation is limited to the first 52 registrants.
Since it was founded in 1972, the Samford detachment has trained cadets who are enrolled as students at Alabama A&M, Birmingham-Southern College, Jefferson State Community College, Miles College, Samford, University of Alabama at Birmingham, University of Alabama in Hunstville, and the University of Montevallo.
Men and women who have earned commissions as second lieutenants through Detachment 012 now live in all 50 states and several foreign nations. They serve as pilots, navigators, nurses and medical officers as well as in various other career fields.
