Posted by Mary Wimberley on 2011-08-19

Samford University Air Force ROTC cadet William Hyden of Pelham, Ala., has been named recipient of a $3,000 Armed Forces Communications and Electronics Association (AFCEA) Joan Bowden Memorial Scholarship.

Hyden was chosen for the award from among cadets representing all AFROTC Detachments in the Mid-south region. The scholarship, established to promote educational excellence, encourage professional development and recognize academic achievement, is awarded based on grade point average, physical fitness and leadership skills.

Cadet Hyden received another honor when he finished number one at recent Field Training at Maxwell Air Force Base in Montgomery, Ala. The ranking earned him the “Top Gun” designation at the end of the rigorous four-week period of leadership and team training for Air Force officer candidates.

Hyden, a cadet in Samford AFROTC Detachment 012, is a junior business management major at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He is the son of Kim and Gary Hyden of Pelham.

The Samford-based AFROTC detachment includes cadets who are enrolled as students at Samford and five other Birmingham area colleges and universities.
