Samford University Theatre will offer a student-directed presentation of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory as a benefit for the Lovelady Center. Performances are in Harrison Theatre at 6 p.m. on March 7 and 2:30 p.m. and 6 p.m. on March 8.
Admission is free. Raffle tickets will be sold for $5 for chances to win chocolate baskets.
The Lovelady Center, a women's shelter in the East Lake area of Birmingham, offers substance abuse recovery and treatment, and transitional programs. The Samford actors will perform the show for children and women of the center on March 9 and present the money made from the campus performances.
Natalie Saxon, a theatre major from Mableton, Ga., directs the play as her senior project. Based on the delightful children's book by Raold Dahl, the play tells the adventures of a youngster inside a chocolate factory.
