Author of 'In Defense of Thomas Jefferson' To Speak at Samford University March 25

Author and attorney William G. Hyland, Jr., will speak on the topic “The Verdict on Thomas Jefferson: What is the Evidence?” at Samford University Thursday, March 25, at 3 p.m. in the moot courtroom of Robinson law building.

Hyland, author of In Defense of Thomas Jefferson: the Sally Hemings Sex Scandal (St. Martin’s Press 2009), is a 1983 graduate of Samford’s Cumberland School of Law. A trial lawyer and former prosecutor who now lives in Tampa Bay, Fla., he is a screenwriter and member of Mystery Writers of America.

The program, co-sponsored by Cumberland and Samford’s Howard College of Arts and Sciences, is free and open to the public.

The event also will feature Arts and Sciences faculty members Dr. David Johnson and Dr. John Mayfield.

Johnson, a biology professor and specialist in genetics and molecular biology, will discuss “What DNA Can Tell Us.”

Mayfield, a history professor and specialist in Old South and Colonial history, will discuss historical evidence.
