Samford to Host Poet Maranhão, Translator Levitin Nov. 27

poetCelebrated Brazilian poet Salgado Maranhão, with translator Alexis Levitin, will present a free public reading of his work at Samford Nov. 27 at 7 p.m. in Divinity North room 302. The pair are participating in the Birmingham Area Consortium for Higher Education (BACHE) Visiting Writers program.

Maranhão, winner of the prestigious 2011 Premio de Poesia da Academia Brasileira de Letras, is one of Brazil's leading contemporary poets. Levitin is one of the most respected contemporary English-language translators of Portuguese, Brazilian and Ecuadorian literature. Levitin recently translated Maranhão's Blood of the Sun, the first of Maranhão's books of poetry to be available in the English language. Copies of the book will be available for sale at the reading.
