Public Invited to Samford Piano Scholarship Competition
The public is invited to the inaugural Fletcher and Nell Morris Piano Scholarship Competition at Samford University Saturday, May 13, in Wright Center Recital Hall. The competition will begin at 9:30 a.m. and conclude in the early afternoon.
Winners receive scholarship awards for piano study in the Samford School of Music. First prize will be an $8,000 scholarship. Second and third prizes of $4,800 and $3,200 will also be awarded.
Judges will include Maurice Hinson, distinguished piano pedagogue and recitalist from Louisville, Ky.; John N. Roberts, music department chair at Mercer University; and Witold Turkiewicz, retired Samford piano faculty member.
The Fletcher and Nell Morris Piano Scholarship Competition was established by a bequest from the estate of Nell Gandy Morris. Mr. and Mrs. Morris became interested in the piano program at Samford through recitals given on campus by Witold Turkiewicz, and his son, Witold, Jr.
