Samford to Celebrate Homecoming Oct. 28-31

Samford University alumni and students will celebrate Homecoming with a weekend of events Oct. 28-31. Activities for all ages, reunions for many classes and organizations, football, and a concert by country music star Brad Paisley will draw Samford graduates from throughout the nation.

Events begin Thursday, Oct. 28, with an organ recital honoring longtime music professor Dr. H. Edward Tibbs at 7:30 p.m.

Friday’s activities include tours of Beeson Divinity School's newly renovated Global Center, a golf tournament, London Studies photo exhibit and reception, and a choral evensong service. The Alumni Association will hold its annual meeting Friday at 4 p.m. Association president Bennie Bumpers of Birmingham will preside. The annual homecoming banquet Friday at 6:30 p.m. will recognize the 2004 Alumni of the Year honorees. The banquet will be followed by a bonfire, fireworks and music by the Samford band at 8:30 p.m.

Saturday highlights include a brunch for the Classes of 1954 and earlier, and reunions for the A Cappella Choir, School of Business, Ida V. Moffett School of Nursing, nutrition and dietetics, journalism and mass communication, London Studies program, Phi Mu, Sigma Nu, band, library staff, and Classes of 1969, 1974, 1979, 1994 and 1999. Hypatia honor society members will enjoy an 80th anniversary brunch.

Hot air balloon rides, basketball scrimmages, A Cappella Choir concert, Sciencenter open house, volleyball game, continuing education programs for pharmacy and education graduates, and Sigma Nu fraternity's 125th anniversary ball are also on Saturday's agenda.

A reunion lunch for all alumni will be 11 a.m.-1 p.m. in Ralph W. Beeson University Center.

The Samford Bulldogs will play Tennessee Tech Saturday at 2 p.m. in Seibert Stadium. The 2004 Homecoming queen and court will be presented at halftime. The popular FunZone for children will offer games, clowns, face painting and more.

Following the game, alumni can enjoy a picnic dinner 5-7 p.m. on the University Quadrangle. Brad Paisley will perform at 8 p.m. in Wright Center Concert Hall. Singer Shelly Fairchild is the opening act. Homecoming events conclude Sunday, Oct. 31, with a 9:30 a.m. worship service followed by brunch. Wanda Lee, executive director, Woman's Missionary Union, Southern Baptist Convention, will speak at the worship service.
