1964 Samford University graduate Wayne Atcheson is featured in a Jan. 3 story in the Wall Street Journal discussing the University of Alabama's national championships. Atcheson is a former sports information director at UA and now is director of the Billy Graham Library in Charlotte, N.C. He was added to Samford's journalism wall of fame during 2012 Homecoming festivities.

Ross Quoted about Attorney Fees
William G. Ross, Cumberland School of Law professor, was quoted in a Jan. 2 story in Legal Times about attorney fees. Ross, who has written two books on the subject, said lawyers should provide "enough information about the billed activity to enable the client to know what questions to ask" about the entry.

Men's Basketball Draws National Attention
The Samford men's basketball game Dec. 29 against the University of Wisconsin drew national attention with mentions in media outlets from coast-to-coast. According to preliminary figures released by Metro Monitor, a Birmingham-based media tracking service, the attention was the equivalent of at least $47,000 in free publicity and reached a potential audience of more than one million viewers/readers.

Carroll Responds to Judge's Decision
Cumberland School of Law Dean John L. Carroll was quoted in Dec. 28 Birmingham News / al.com story about a local judge's decision to postpone a trial until after the Jan. 7 national championship game involving the University of Alabama football team.
Carroll said the issue of a lawyer asking for a hearing or trial continuance based on a football game is a question of how it affects that attorney's client.

In a story published in several media outlets, fourth-year McWhorter School of Pharmacy student Lucas Beech and his wife Haley were featured about their winter break mission trip to Haiti, where they supplied Christmas gifts to more than 200 children in a poverty-stricken region of the country.

Carden Speaks on Tax Incentives
Art Carden, assistant professor in Samford's Brock School of Business, was quoted in a story distributed across Alabama about state and local tax incentives for businesses. Carden said that instead of trying to incentivize large companies, states might be better off lowering taxes, including small businesses. He questions whether or not giving away money in the form of incentives or job training is a good use of state dollars.

David Smolin, director of Samford's Center for Children, Law and Ethics, was featured on a Dec. 27 broadcast of The Takeway. Smolin, who is parent of internationally-adopted children, spoke on the recent laws preventing American adoptions of Russian children.
