American-Mideastern relations specialist Dr. Fawaz Gerges will speak at Samford University Wednesday (SEPT. 20) at 7 p.m. in Dwight Beeson Hall Auditorium. The public is invited free of charge.
Dr. Gerges, professor of International Affairs and Middle Eastern Studies at Sarah Lawrence College, New York City, will speak on the topic "America and Americans in the Mind of Arabs and Muslims: Past, Present and Future." The talk will be followed by a Question and Answer session.
Gerges is the author of American and Political Islam: Clash of Cultures or Clash of Interests? (Cambridge University Press 1999). The book includes a chapter on the lasting impact of Iranian events of 1979-80 on U.S. policy. He is also the author of The Superpowers & the Middle East: Regional & International Politics, 1955-1967 (Westview Press, 1994).
He has served two years as a MacArthur Fellow and recently completed a lecture series at American University of Beirut. Gerges holds a Ph.D. degree from Oxford University.
During his three-day Samford visit sponsored by the school's Department of History and Political Science, Dr. Gerges will also meet with students and faculty in several classes and an honors colloquium.
