Samford University's Orlean Bullard Beeson School of Education and Professional Studies will host 134 teachers and administrators from five southeastern states, including Alabama, this week (JULY 16-19).

"Teachers as Leaders" is the theme of the Samford Summer Institute for Teaching Excellence, to be held at the Wynfrey Hotel. During the week, a team of higher education partners, principals and classroom teachers from each state will formulate action plans to encourage teachers as leaders. The teams will take the plans back to their states for implementation in teacher education curricula.

Featured speaker is Everett Kline, senior associate, Center on Learning Assessment and School Structure and director of the New Jersey Consortium on Assessment. He will speak on the topic "Assessing Teacher Performance to Improve Academic Achievement" Tuesday at 8:30 a.m.

The Samford campus will also be busy all week with groups of all ages. Conferences include workshops for kindergarten teachers, high school debaters from 12 states, elementary and middle school age aspiring actors and young musicians.
