Students from 68 high schools in 31 counties will arrive at Samford University Sunday afternoon, June 18, for Alabama Governor's School (AGS). A total of 96 rising high school seniors will attend the two-week honors program. Opening ceremony is Sunday at 2:45 p.m. in Harrison Theatre.
Each participant will select a major area of coursework as well as a secondary area of interest. Course topics include psychomath, the legal process, healthcare, engineering, the arts, urban geography, preserving the Cahaba River, and others.
A special "Insights Dinner" on Thursday, June 27, will feature WVTM 13 television news anchor Fran Curry, who will discuss television broadcasting. The students will also attend a Barons baseball game and visit special sites in Montgomery.
Recreation includes volleyball tournaments, a talent show, AGS Olympics and a farewell dance.
This is the 14th year for Samford to host the AGS program for academically talented students who will be high school seniors next fall.
