Greek and Latin scholars from around the South and Midwest are in Birmingham this weekend for the 82nd meeting of the Classical Association of the Middle West and South. About 150 university classics professors are attending.

A total of 98 papers will be presented in sessions at the Radisson Hotel and Samford University, the host institution. Association president Robert W. Ulery, Jr., of Wake Forest University will present an organ concert and speak Friday night at Samford.

Vulcan will be the topic of a Saturday morning paper entitled "A Roman God in Birmingham," by Karelissa Hartigan of the University of Florida. Another Florida scholar, Lewis A. Sussman, will give a paper on classical references in Martin Luther King, Jr.'s last speech, "I've Been to the Mountaintop."

Samford history professor Jonathan Bass will lead a visit to the Civil Rights Institute Saturday. Bass is author of the book, "Blessed Are the Peacemakers," about King's "Letter from Birmingham Jail" and the ministers to whom it was written.
