Samford University will observe Constitution Day with a program on Monday, Sept. 19, at the Colonial Chapel at the American Village in Montevallo. The public is invited.

Kevin Newsom, solicitor general of Alabama, will speak on the topic, "The Rehnquist Legacy" at 3:30 p.m. Newsom, a Samford graduate, clerked for U.S. Supreme Court associate justice David Souter following graduation from Harvard Law School.

Supreme Court Chief Justice William H. Rehnquist died Sept. 3 after a 33-year Supreme Court career.

Newsom's talk will be followed by comments from Samford political science professor Dr. William Collins.

The program is designed to coincide with the first federally recognized Constitution Day, a national celebration of the U.S. government's founding document. The Constitution was adopted on Sept. 17, 1787. This year, because the date falls on a Saturday, the Samford-sponsored event will be on the following Monday.
