Fellowship, food, football and fun are high on the agenda for Samford University Homecoming weekend November 15 and 16. Alumni, parents and guests can anticipate a full schedule for activities.
Registration is underway online, with mailed invitations going out soon. Many events require advance reservations by November 6.
Graduates from 50 or more years ago will kick off the weekend schedule with a Golden Bulldog Luncheon on Friday, Nov. 15, at 11:30 a.m. Later in Reid Chapel, a 5:30 p.m. vespers service of worship, scripture and song will feature the Samford Chorale, A Cappella Choir and alumni.
A homecoming highlight, the annual alumni banquet to recognize the Alumni of the Year, will begin at 6:30 p.m. This year's honorees are Mark Cottingham, Class of 1983, Michael "Mickey" Newsome, Class of 1962, and Sylvia Young, class of 1983, and Outstanding Young Alumnus of the Year Jeff Stephens, Class of 2004.
Saturday morning events include a continuing education session for McWhorter School of Pharmacy alumni, a "morning sing" featuring the Samford A Cappella Choir, and the always-entertaining homecoming parade. The popular Live at the Library program at 9 a.m. in Davis Library will feature Samford professor Julie Hedgepeth Williams, who will speak on her most recent book, A Rare Titanic Family. The journalism and mass communication department will honor the late Jasper Hutto, an early editor of the Crimson student newspaper and Entre Nous yearbook, at its Wall of Fame ceremony at 11:15 a.m.
Mid-day events include the new tradition of the Bulldog Walk to cheer on the football team, and tailgates and reunions on the quadrangle for various academic units, sororities, fraternities and Classes of 1983, 1988, 1998 and 2008. The nursing school barbecue lunch will be outside the Center for Healing Arts. The Class of 1963 will celebrate its 50th anniversary with a luncheon in Wright Center.
The Samford Bulldog football team will take on the University of Tennessee Chattanooga at 2 p.m. in Seibert Stadium.
Various alumni groups have reunions scheduled throughout the weekend, including Chi Omega Zeta Zeta chapter's 50th anniversary gala on Saturday evening.
