Samford University's Leslie S. Wright Fine Arts Center continues its "Signature Series" by presenting the Alabama premiere of "Racine D'or" by Movement Workshop Group Oct. 29 at 8 p.m.

Movement Workshop Group was founded in 2005 in New York City.tree13 Led by Artistic Director Leslie Guyton, the company consists of dancers, actors, and musicians who work together to create unique dance theatre pieces that integrate every possible method to tell compelling and inspired stories.

"Racine D'or" draws from Cajun folktales and the diversity of Louisiana, combining contemporary dance theater with traditional Zydeco music, blending Louisiana Creole French with American folk and blues to create a sound all its own.

As part of "Racine D'or", Movement Workshop Group will be joined by four-time Grammy Award nominee Cedric Watson and his group Bijou Creole.  Watson is an accomplished fiddler, singer, accordionist, and songwriter who has been hailed as one of the brightest young talents in Cajun, Creole, and Zydeco music over the last decade. He worked directly with the Group to create the specific music heard during "Racine D'or."

The plot of "Racine D'or" is described by the company as "Imagine a world where the air is thick and the trees are heavy. The land is soft and the waters of the Mississippi lap the shore with an ever-steady heartbeat. The sun dips low, casting a warm glow through the river reeds. The stars awaken, heralding a magic hour. This is Racine D'or, the story of four friends who encounter the joys of innocence and the temptations of trouble and in doing so discover the destruction of community - and what each of them has to do to restore it."

For their Birmingham performance, Movement Workshop Group will be featuring 10 dancers from North Central Alabama. These dancers will have the opportunity to rehearse with the company and will be featured performers throughout the production.

Additionally, Movement Workshop Group will host a series of master classes and demonstrations for local student performers. This will provide a unique opportunity for North Central Alabama student dancers and actors to be immersed in the unique methods and techniques of Movement Workshop Group, according to Sean Wright, director of the Wright Center.

Tickets for this event are $15-$25 with student tickets just $10. Package and season tickets are still available, as well starting at just $150. Tickets are available online at tickets.samford.edu or by calling the Samford Arts Box Office at 205-726-2853. Regular box office hours are 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

This performance is made possible through the support of the National Endowment for the Arts, South Arts and the Alabama State Council on the Arts.  More information on the entire Signature Series, including upcoming performances with Savion Glover and Bela Fleck, as well as all other events held at the Wright Center, can be found online at www.samford.edu/wrightcenter.
