Samford University’s University Fellows honors program will present its third annual Great Ideas Summer Institute June 16-22, 2013.

The unique, week-long academic experience is for intellectually ambitious rising high school juniors and seniors who will enjoy the energy of a college classroom, engage ideas that form the essence of humane learning, and develop friendships with exceptional high school students from throughout the nation.

GISI students live, study, and recreate much as University Fellows do, and the Fellows themselves serve as assistants in the GISI program. Full-time Samford faculty lead GISI’s discussion-oriented classes.

GISI’s three daily class sessions are complemented by speakers, films, and other activities. In addition to campus activities, GISI students explore Birmingham, including trips to the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute, the Birmingham Art Museum and other attractions.

This year’s GISI will explore the theme of “Greece, Rome, and the American Republic.” On the first day, students will discuss the Greek origins of western politics through works by Pericles, Plato, and Aristotle. Next, GISI moves to Roman political theory, with selections from Livy, Plutarch, and Cicero on the growth of the Republic and the rise of Imperial Rome. Day three will examine how 18th century polemicists made the case for the American Revolution, utilizing ideas from ancient history and philosophy. On day four, students will engage the Federalist and the Anti-Federalist debates surrounding constitutionalism. Finally, the students will look at different conceptions of republicanism through the works of John C. Calhoun, Abraham Lincoln and Thurgood Marshall.

GISI tuition of $395 per student covers the costs of reading materials, housing, meals and organized activities. Online applications are due no later than April 26.

A select group of Samford professors will take part in a separate Faculty Great Ideas Summer Institute June 3-7, co-sponsored by University Fellows and Samford’s Core Texts Program. Like the student GISI, the faculty version focuses on specific original texts. This year’s program will explore the writings of the Roman statesman Cicero.
