Family Weekend at Samford University promises a full schedule of events, but also time for parent-student catch-up. More than 600 families have pre-registered for the September 27-28 event.

Activities begin Friday, Sept. 27, with registration in the Howard Room, located in the University Center. Friday evening highlights include a 7 p.m. informal Pie with the President dessert reception on Ben Brown Plaza followed by an outdoor movie featuring Monsters University.

"These events are free to Samford families thanks to the generosity of the Samford Student Government Association, Campus Life and Parents Association," said  Samford director of parent programs Kelia Furr, who already expects parents from California, Colorado, Texas, Illinois, Indiana and most southern states.

"Many siblings and grandparents are making plans to join in the on the weekend activities as well," notes Furr.

Saturday's events include a Parents Association breakfast and meeting followed by open houses hosted by various organizations and departments and a tailgate lunch on the quadrangle. The Samford Bulldog football team will take on Western Carolina University in Seibert Stadium at 2 p.m. The evening is free for families to plan special time together.

On Sunday, Sept. 29, students and their families are invited to worship together as they choose. The popular annual Samford Hymn Sing, featuring audience participation in the selection and singing of favorite hymns and gospel songs, will be at 2 p.m. in Reid Chapel.

Other weekend events include campus tours, a Samford soccer match against Georgia Southern, an Alabama Symphony Orchestra SuperPOPS concert, a photo booth for family pictures and additional fun opportunities.

Families can register online at www.samford.edu/parents/familyweekend until 2 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 25.  After that time, registration can be made in person with cash or check on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 27 and 28, during check-in hours in the Howard Room.

Blocks of rooms at several area hotels have been reserved at a discounted rate for Samford families. Many Family Weekend events are free, and other tickets are sold a la carte to allow family members to purchase admission to the activities they wish to attend.
