Funeral Leave

  • Full time employees may use up to three days (per occurrence) of their accrued sick leave to attend or arrange funerals for the members of their immediate families.
  • Immediate family is limited to spouse, child, parent, step-parent, sibling, mother-in-law, father-in-law, sister-in-law, brother-in-law, daughter-in-law, son-in-law, grandparent, and grandchild.
  • You should notify your supervisor as soon as possible when taking leave due to death in the family.
  • Upon return to work an official record, obituary notice, or other form of documentation to substantiate the request for paid leave may be required.

Funeral Leave Frequently Asked Questions

  • I need additional days off work for travel time. Can I use vacation time to cover these days?
    Yes. You may use vacation time if you need additional time off for travel. Please coordinate this time with your supervisor.
  • I want to attend my friend's funeral. Can I use funeral leave for this?
    No. If you have been approved by your supervisor to attend, you will need to use vacation time to attend a friend's funeral.
  • Whom do I give the obituary notice upon my return to work?
    Please give the documentation to your immediate supervisor.
