M.S. in Education with Gifted Certification
Thank you for your interest in Samford University’s graduate program in Gifted Education. This is an online (web-based) degree program designed to prepare teachers to become certified gifted specialists (grades P-12). Candidates must hold a Class B certificate from the Alabama State Department of Education (or be eligible for Class B certification from ALSDE based on out-of-state certification). The master’s degree program requires 30-33 semester credits, 18 of which are in the gifted teaching field. Candidates holding a master’s degree and Alabama Class A Certification in another teaching field may have their transcripts evaluated to determine if previous coursework can be applied to electives in the gifted program of study.
This program is offered primarily online with blended course delivery. Candidates are expected to attend an on-campus orientation at the beginning of the program at which time a program overview, introduction to Moodle (online learning management system), and course expectations will be presented. During each course, there will be both on-campus and online (synchronous and asynchronous) class meetings. Some accommodations will be made for individuals who are unable to attend on-campus class meetings. At the end of the program, all candidates are expected to attend the on-campus comprehensive examination and program debriefing.
