Samford's Alabama Center for Law & Civic UnderstandingGets $5,000 Grant from Alabama Civil Justice Foundation
The Alabama Center for Law & Civic Education at Samford University received a $5,000 grant from the Alabama Civil Justice Foundation to support its mission of teaching civic knowledge, skills and responsibilities to Alabama youth.
Located in Samford's Cumberland School of Law, the center is Alabama's only non-partisan resource and training center providing programs and educational materials to teachers and volunteers to support the civic mission in schools.
The center sponsors such programs as "Play by the Rules," a two-week curriculum to teach seventh-graders the laws to which Alabama holds them accountable. Developed in 2001 with the Alabama attorney general's office, Alabama Department of Education and Alabama Department of Youth Services, it is the only program of its type in the United States.
The Alabama Center for Law & Civic Understanding was founded in 1990 by Executive Director Janice A. Bedford.
